How to make a scanned PDF searchable
A scanned PDF is a stack of photographs. It looks like a document, but Ctrl+F finds nothing, a sentence cannot be copied, and a search across your files walks straight past it. OCR fixes that by reading the words in the image and laying real text behind them.

Set the language, or leave it on automatic
On OCR PDF, Document language starts on Detect automatically. If you know the language, choose it before uploading. It is faster and avoids a wrong guess. Bangla, English, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Russian, Spanish and Dutch are recognised, each alongside English.
Upload the scan
Drop the PDF in and recognition starts by itself. Pages that already carry real text are left as they are; only the pages that are pictures of words are read.
Check the lines that matter
Each recognised line appears as an editable line over the original page. Click any that matter (names, amounts, dates) and correct them. Recognition is an estimate, and its mistakes can look entirely plausible, especially in numbers.
Save and download
Save Changes builds the PDF and shows a preview before Download PDF. Every recognised line you did not touch is saved as invisible text over the scan, so the page looks exactly as it did, but its words can now be searched, selected and copied.
Documents with more than 30 scanned pages
The first 30 scanned pages are recognised in one go, and you are told if there are more; pages after that keep their image without text. For a longer document, split it into parts with Split PDF, make each part searchable, and join them again with Merge PDF.
Better scans give better text
Recognition is most accurate on straight, clean, high-contrast pages. A grey or speckled page, or a phone photo, is worth running through Enhance Scan first, and a page scanned sideways through Rotate PDF, before recognition, not after.
Common questions
Will the PDF look any different?
Not where you left it alone: the original scan stays as the visible page and the text behind it is invisible. A line you corrected is redrawn as visible text over the scan, and a close look can reveal it.
Can I just copy the text out instead?
Yes. PDF to Text reads the same kind of pages and gives you the text to copy or download as a text file, without making a new PDF.
Does it read handwriting?
Not reliably. It is built for printed text; handwriting, unusual typefaces and low-resolution photos are where accuracy drops the most.
